The Council of the European Union has adopted its negotiating positions on two legislative proposals that tackle the energy aspects of the EU’s climate transition under the ‘Fit for 55’ package: the renewable energies directive and the energy efficiency directive.
EU ministers agreed on new 2030 targets which will make energy use in the EU more efficient and increase the share of renewables. The Council agreed to set a binding EU-level target of 40% of energy from renewable sources in the overall energy mix by 2030. The Council also agreed to reduce energy consumption at the EU level by 36% for final energy consumption and 39% for primary energy consumption by 2030.
