More than 47% of the electricity generated in the European Union last year came from renewable sources, according to Eurostat.
The figure represents an increase of 2.6% compared to 2023, the European statistics office said on Wednesday. Most of the renewable electricity came from wind power.
Denmark and Portugal led the way, generating 89% and 87% of their electricity respectively from sustainable sources.
At the other end of the scale, Malta and the Czech Republic lagged behind with 15 and 18% respectively.
Wind energy accounted for 39% of the EU’s total renewable electricity production. Hydropower contributed 30%, while solar energy accounted for 22%.
