Spain has made history by producing more than half of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar power in 2023.
The increase in renewable energy production was mainly driven by wind and solar power, the leading energy sources for the second consecutive year. Wind power generated 63,000 GWh, or 23.3 percent of the total electricity, while solar power generated 37,000 GWh, or 14 percent of the total electricity, surpassing hydropower, which accounted for 9.5 percent.
The government has committed to increasing the share of renewable energy to 74 percent of Spain’s total electricity production by 2030, a realistic goal given the country’s natural abundance of sunshine and wind.
To achieve this goal, the government has supported several large-scale projects involving solar installations and wind farms.
